Trichotillomania - Psychologists?

Hi everyone,

My 12 yo daughter started pulling her eyebrows and eyelashes out last year. They are now essentially completely gone. It seems to be something that runs in my family (we're all pickers to varying levels; my sister has no eyebrows or eyelashes due to trich; so i have some knowledge of how "tricky" this devastating condition can be). My daughter was also diagnosed with Autism late last year and sees a psychologist for general support with that. However i am struggling to find a psychologist in Adelaide that has ANY experience with Trich. Does anyone know of a good psychologist either in SA or interstate for video conference appointments, with experience with Trich? Many thanks

Hi @Nae1

So very glad that you have found your way here as it takes a lot of guts to tell your story.  This forum is full of people with a huge range of backgrounds who will be able to offer you sound advice.  Alas, I am not one of them, but am sure you will be contacted soon by someone who can assist you.  The people on this forum are there for you.  Take care 🙂

Re: Trichotillomania - Psychologists?

Thank you 🙏

Re: Trichotillomania - Psychologists?

Hey @Nae1 what a difficult situation and condition to be dealing with, and so young.

I don't have much experience or advice either sorry, however I though it might be worth asking over on the Family and Careers side of the forum to see if anyone over there has any experience or recommendations for you.

All the best 🙏

Re: Trichotillomania - Psychologists?

Hi Nae1,

I'm also on the hunt for a psychologist experienced in trich for myself. I live in the ACT and am having no such luck here either - currently I'm searching through the Australian Psychologists Society website for psychologists in Sydney/Melb that do video sessions... Just wondering if you have ended up finding anyone for your daughter, and if you would be willing to share their details if you have?

Thanks!

Re: Trichotillomania - Psychologists?

Hello there, Melbourne Children's Psychology Clinic has a hair pulling clinic, and they have agreed to see my daughter via video (zoom). Yay! My daughter is seeing Gabrielle Connell - it's early days but she seems fabulous and very knowledgeable. It would be worth looking Gabrielle up in case she consults elsewhere for adults. Before we got in with MCPC i also had a chat to the practice manager at MindBox psychology in NSW - they said they have experience trich and were able to do zoom sessions. Good luck with your search 🙂
