Poor treatment from mental health professionals

I am starting to think that I am an awful, disgusting person. If I was an ok or good person, then why would mental health professionals, hospitals, mental health hospitals, helplines etc treat me so badly?

1+1=2 right?

Hey @Alison2022

I am really sorry to hear you are going through a tough time at the moment, sounds like you have been through a lot. It also sounds like you are being too hard on yourself, don't you think?

I just wanted to remind you of how amazing you are. We all have moments when we're too hard on ourselves, and it's important to recognize the incredible qualities that make you unique.

You're resilient and capable of so much more.

Sending positive vibes your way!

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

@Alison2022  I don't know anything about you or your circumstances, but I just want you to know that what your talking about is not all that uncommon. I've been treated badly/abusively by therapists, and I've encountered scores of others over they years who have been treated similarly, as well.

They aren't all saints in the mental health industry, it has it's fair share of monsters, too.

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

Sometimes they don't have the answers. But instead of admitting that and helping redirect you in life, their fragile egos get intimidated and therefore they treat you nastily. I've experienced it myself, particularly with my old GP. I got "blamed" because the treatment wasn't working. It couldn't possibly have been that the therapist wasn't a good fit for me, or that it simply wasn't working. A bad doctor will blame the patient if treatment isn't working. A good doctor will consider that maybe the treatment isn't working and another approach is needed. It's not you though.

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

@Alison2022  your not the problem, they are! unfortunately a lot of Doctors think they are still entitled to say what they please, no matter who or how they affect people. I's not right and it's not you.

I went for help about my stress levels a few years ago and the doctor actually said " what has you got to be stressed about" in a sarcastic tone, she got a shock when I bit back with " I have 3 kids diagnosed ASD", her jew did drop at that lol. I saw her one more time after that and she didn't say a single word wrong.

a lot of them don't have lived experience, empathy or want to understand, yet think they know absolutely everything known to man, so it's not you at all, they just need to remove the stick from their butt or do some sort of retaining to regain a personality 🙂 no one ever asks for mental health problems and it's their job to help you.

Please don't let them doubt yourself, you are worth more than that, you have the courage to seek help, please continue on that journey to recovery even if it's just to spite them, it will be worth it

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

@David76 right @Alison2022   - it's not you  - it's possibly the treatment or the therapist  - certainly not because your a horrible person

I have experienced two failed surgeries on my left shoulder  - in the first case the surgeon might have failed   - the second surgeon did his best

Now I have chronic pain and I am sure no one thinks I'm a bad person  - I certainly don't  - and I wonder why anyone would think that of someone with a mental health issue

I'm sorry you feel at such a loss - you deserve better

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

Not at all @Alison2022 !

I'm sorry you've experienced that. I used to work in community mental health and came across many specialists I would never recommend. Their attitudes were atrocious. There are good and bad out there. Please don't give up on yourself. You have strengths and good qualities, never forget that.

Warm hugs to you

Hanami

Re: Poor treatment from mental health professionals

Your citing of 1+1 provoked me to sit upright. TY. There's that quote from Orwell's 1984 ~ "... the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows..."
I totally get that!

I'd offer you a few things.

That there is not a trace of awful, nor disgusting or even unreasonable in your post.
Not a skerrick.

That basic reasoning (arithmetic), needs to be valid in order for us to function. But we need more too.

Reactions of others, is more complicated. And most of it takes place where we cannot see.

That MH Professionals, hospitals of any sort, helplines; these are obligated to treat anyone, professionally, reasonably and quite simply, in an adult manner.
- They sometimes don't, and it defies reason to suggest that you (or any other individual) make them do or be other than they should be.
- If they don't, it's their failing, not yours or mine.
